An operator troubleshoots rising sludge in the secondary clarifier and records: aeration basin DO = 2.5 mg/L (normal), SVI = 95 mL/g (good settling), effluent nitrate = 22 mg/L (high), effluent ammonia = <1 mg/L (nitrification complete). What is the most likely cause?

Correct Answer: B. Good SVI plus complete nitrification plus high nitrate plus rising sludge is textbook clarifier denitrification. The sludge itself is fine — the settling test proves it. Once nitrate-rich mixed liquor settles into the blanket and goes anoxic, denitrifying bacteria convert nitrate to nitrogen gas, and those bubbles float chunks of otherwise healthy sludge to the surface. The fixes are all about residence time and nitrate: increase RAS rate to move sludge through the blanket faster, add an anoxic zone to strip nitrate before the clarifier, or move to a hydraulic suction mechanism for faster sludge withdrawal.
